Bacon's Large Scale Plan of Leeds early 1900s.This map was originally published by G W Bacon & Co of London at a scale of 6 inches to the mile and is divided into quarter mile squares (18 columns marked 1 to 18 and 19 rows marked A to S). It is scanned onto the CD as 6 overlapping tiles. The map, which was printed in greyscale, covers the area from Toads Hole & Farnley in the west to Girton Wood & Thwaite Mills in the east and from Meanwood Side in the north to Mill Shaw & Middleton Grange in the south. In addition to the map the CD contains the complete street index and advertisements as included in the original. There is some minor damage at the folds and some fading/ink bleed which blurs a little of the text but most is clearly readable. One of the advertisements included with this map, which shows an early car being loaded onto a steamer, has the number "1911" within it - but it is not clear if this is a date. However, the mapping (certainly in parts) appears to be earlier than that as it does not show Elland Road football ground (opened 1897) and Marsh Lane Tunnel (opened out in 1894) is shown as a tunnel rather than a cutting.Price £5.00 (GBP 5.00) plus £1.00 (GBP 1) postage & packing (first class within the UK and by air mail to customers outside the UK). |
