Echoes in Glossop Dale. This book of 192 pages was written by S Taylor of Tintwistle in 1874. It records the growth of Methodism in Glossop and the surrounding area over the previous hundred years and includes a biography of Squire Edward Brooke, the Lay Preacher from Huddersfield.
Peak Sketches. There are only 37 pages to this 1882 booklet but it is none the less fascinating for that. The contents are three "fragmentary sketches" originally published in local newspapers.
Cowbrook Mill Auction Catalogue of 1898. The contents of Cowbrook Mill (machinery and stock) were auctioned on 11th May 1898. The catalogue provides a superb insight into the contents of a late Victorian cotton mill, despite the fact that pages 7/8 are missing from the original.
Glossop; A sketch from the earliest period. The famed Glossop local historian, Robert Hamnett, published this booklet of 70 pages in 1904. As the title suggests, it examines Glossop's history from early times. The booklet also includes illustrations and advertisements from local traders of the time.
Order of Service for the Dedication of the Lych Gate War Memorial at Whitfield Church, 1923. The 8 pages include the Roll of Honour of the Men of the Parish of Whitfield who gave their lives for their Country in the Great War.
Souvenir of the Opening of Manor Park 1927. When the Glossop Dale Estate was sold in 1925 the Corporation purchased the outer grounds of Glossop Hall for use of the townspeople as a public park. This illustrated booklet celebrates the opening of Manor Park, the Rose Queen Pageant and the Whitfield Well Dressing Festival. This is another publication which includes contemporary trade advertisements.
Church Bazaar Brochures. In the first half of the twentieth century church bazaars were lavish events which typically lasted about 3 days and were based around a theme. The CD contains four examples of brochures from these events: Whitfield Parish Church 1901; Mount Pleasant Congregational Church 1926; Brookfield Congregational Church 1927; Whitfield Parish Church 1928. Of great interest in several of these publications are the advertisements for various businesses in the Glossop area.
