Syddalls in Glossop - Page 1

This page shows my Syddall ancestors in Glossop in Derbyshire, England (based mainly on the Parish Registers). All being well the analysis is accurate but if there are mistakes then I apologise. Like everyone else, I'm human (honest) so please use this list as it is intended and check back against the original documents to be sure. Happy hunting.

1. Phineas Syddall b. ca 1703, occ: Shoemaker & linen weaver, m. Sarah (Syddall), b. ca 1716, d. 19 Apr 1798, bur: Parish Church, Glossop, DBY. Phineas died 5 Oct 1791, bur: 7 Oct 1791, Parish Church, Glossop, DBY. Parish register says that he died of "a decay of nature" and that he was aged 88. Baptism entries describe him as "of Padfield", some adding "Sr" or "the Elder". Sarah: Parish register givs her age as 82 when she died.

Phineas Syddall b. ca 1736, bpt: 28 Feb 1736, Gee Cross Unitarian Chapel, Hyde, occ: Linen Weaver, m. 17 Sep 1758, in Parish Church, Glossop, DBY, Elizabeth Knott, b. ca 1738, d. 17 Jan 1792, bur: 19 Jan 1792, Parish Church, Glossop, DBY. Phineas died 19 Jul 1784, bur: 21 Jul 1784, Parish Church, Glossop, DBY. Parish register describes him as of Padfield and says he was 48 when he died. Some entries describe him as "Jr". Elizabeth: Patish register entry for her buial describes her as "Betty, Widow of Phineas Syddall Jr of Padfield", aged 55 and says she died "of a Diabetes".

3. Joseph Siddall occ: Linen weaver, m. 23 Dec 1762, in Parish Church, Glossop, DBY, Hannah Garlick.

Benjamin Syddall b. ca 1745, occ: Linen weaver, m. 28 Mar 1769, in Parish Church, Glossop, DBY, Betty Garlick, bpt: 20 Feb 1747, Glossop Parish Church, (daughter of John Garlick see family #3 on the first Garlick Page). Benjamin bur: 26 Aug 1821, Parish Church, Glossop, DBY. Parish register entries describe him as being of Padfield, Hilltop and Betten Hill. Entry for his burial gives his age as 76. Banns for marriage read 5, 12, 19 March 1769. Witnesses to marriage Jonathin Knott, John Bray.

James Siddall b. ca 1747, bpt: 18 Apr 1748, Tintwistle Independent, occ: Weaver, m. 9 Jun 1774, in Parish Church, Glossop, DBY, Sarah Dewsnapp. James died 16 Nov 1816, bur: 20 Nov 1816, Parish Church, Glossop, DBY. Parish register entries describe him as of Glossop & Manchester and that he was 69 when he died.

6. Martha Thornely Syddall bpt: 24 Dec 1755, Parish Church, Glossop, DBY, m. 13 Jul 1777, in Glossop, Samuel Garlick, b. Jan 1754, bpt: 25 Jan 1754, Glossop Parish Church, (son of John Garlick see family #5 on the first Garlick Page) occ: See notes, d. 7 Jul 1827, bur: 10 Jul 1827, Glossop Parish Church. Samuel: Parish register entries describe him as of Padfield and give his occupation variously as linen weaver, husbandman, farmer, shoemaker & labourer. Appears to have been a second bpt on 19 Feb 1754 at Tintwistle Independent. Witneses to marriage were Jonathan Knott & George Siddall.

John Sydall b. ca 1762, occ: Cotton spinner/Linen Wvr, m. 1778, Mary Wood, b. ca 1760, bpt: 10 Feb 1760, Glossop, (daughter of Nathan Wood and Mary Whitworth) d. ca 1849 (see family #8 on the first Wood Page). John died Feb 1798, bur: 19 Feb 1798, Parish Church, Glossop, DBY. Parish register describes him as of Padfield and gives his age as 36 when he died.

Samuel Siddal b. ca 1764, occ: Weaver, m. 13 Jan 1788, in Mottram in Longdendale, Jenny Wood, b. ca 1766, (daughter of Joshua Wood) d. 15 Jun 1794, bur: 17 Jun 1794, Parish Church, Glossop, DBY (see family #26 on the second Wood Page). Parish register entries describe him as "of Padfield". Jenny: Parish register says she was 28 when she died.

Joseph Siddall b. ca 1776, occ: Fustian weaver & spinner, m. 21 Jan 1783, in Parish Church, Glossop, DBY, Martha Chorton, b. ca 1760, (daughter of John Chorton) bur: 29 Dec 1825, Parish Church, Glossop, DBY. Joseph bur: 10 Jul 1831, Parish Church, Glossop, DBY. Parish register describes him as "of Padfield" & says he was 55 when he died. Martha: Parish register says she was 65 when she died.

10. John Syddall m. 21 Aug 1791, in Parish Church, Glossop, DBY, Sarah Marshall, (daughter of Thomas Marshall). Parish register entries describe him as "of Padfield".

11. Martha Syddall m. 20 Nov 1791, in Parish Church, Glossop, DBY, George Knott, (son of Jonathan Knott) occ: Clothier & labourer. George: Parish register entries describe him as of Padfield & Glossop.

12. James Syddall b. ca 1769, occ: Hatter, m. 1 Jan 1790, in Parish Church, Glossop, DBY, Ellen Tatton, b. ca 1769, d. 24 Jun 1849, bur: Parish Church, Glossop, DBY. James died 1 Jan 1840, bur: Parish Church, Glossop, DBY. Parish register describes him as of Padfield, Bettin Hill, Tintwistle and Spire Hollin and says he was 70 when he died. Ellen: MI says she was in her 60th year when she died.

13. Samuel Garlick b. 25 Aug 1793, bpt: 7 Oct 1793, Parish Church, Glossop, DBY, occ: Cotton spinner, m. 21 Sep 1819, in Glossop Parish Church, Mary Buckley. PR describes him as of Whitfield, Padfield & Moor Side. Witnesses to marriage eere John Clark & Thomas Harrison.

14. John Sydall b. 4 Jan 1783, bpt: 7 Feb 1783, Parish Church, Glossop, DBY, occ: Cotton spinner, m. Mary (Sydall), d. 10 Oct 1824, bur: Parish Church, Glossop, DBY. John died 7 Jul 1855, bur: Parish Church, Glossop, DBY. Parish register describes him as of Padfield.

15. Elizabeth Sydall b. 1795, m. 26 May 1822, in Glossop, John Platt, b. 12 Dec 1797, Glossop, bpt: 25 May 1817, Glossop, (son of John Platt and Mary Hinchcliffe) occ: Farmer. Elizabeth bur: 31 Dec 1830, Parish Church, Glossop, DBY. Entry in parish register gives her age as 35 when she died. No record of birth or baptism found but naming patterns mean that she must be the daughter of James & Ellen (see family #16 on the first Platt page).

16. Martha Sydall b. 25 Oct 1801, bpt: 22 Feb 1802, Parish Church, Glossop, DBY, m. 22 Nov 1822, in Parish Church, Glossop, DBY, Thomas Collier, b. ca 1797, (son of Samuel Collier and Hannah Kershaw) occ: Clockmaker (see family #1 on the second Collier Page). Martha died 1857. Thomas: Parish register entries describe him as "of Bridge End".

Joseph Syddal b. 26 Mar 1803, bpt: 20 Jun 1803, Parish Church, Glossop, DBY, occ: Cotton spinner, m. 13 Nov 1825, in Parish Church, Glossop, DBY, Ann Jackson, b. ca 1802, d. 17 Jun 1874, bur: Parish Church, Glossop, DBY. Joseph died 5 Mar 1868, Manchester, bur: Parish Church, Glossop, DBY. Parish register entries describe him as of Spire Hollin & Woodcock Road. MI says he died aged 65 and was late of Tatton. Ann: MI say she did in her 73rd year.

18. George Siddall occ: Cotton rover & carter, m. 16 Nov 1828, in Parish Church, Glossop, DBY, Mary Bennett, b. c 1806, d. 10 Jul 1888, bur: Parish Church, Glossop, DBY. Parish register entries describe him as of Spire Hollin. He predeceased his wife as she was described as a widow in the parish register when she died. Mary: MI says she died in her 82nd year.
