Platts in Glossop - Page 1

This page shows my Platt ancestors in Glossop in Derbyshire, England. I must acknowledge the help of my friend Roger Hadfield in compiling the data. All being well the analysis is accurate but if there are mistakes then they are mine alone and I apologise. Like everyone else, I'm human (honest) so please use this list as it is intended and check back against the original documents to be sure. Happy hunting.

1. Joshua Platt m. Dorothy (Platt), bur: 30 Aug 1707, Glossop. Entries in parish register say "of Glossop" and "of Dinting". He possibly came from Mottram.

(1) 14 Dec 1724, in Mottram in Longdendale, Martha Woolley, b. 17 Mar 1702, Hollingworth, bpt: 17 Mar 1702, Mottram in Longdendale, (daughter of Joseph Woolley and Hannah Winterbottom) d. 15 Oct 1748, Glossop, bur: Glossop, m. (2) Sarah Mellor, d. 1773. Joshua died 8 Mar 1770, Glossop, bur: 11 Mar 1770, Glossop. Described in his will, dated 22 Feb 1770, as "of Mouselowe". MI gives his age at death as 74. IGI also records marriage in Glossop on 18 May 1725. Martha: MI gives her age when she died as 42.

His will, dated 23 Mar 1775, describes him as "of Shaw". It also mentions his son-in-law the Rev Henry Walkden and grandson James Platt of Manchester.

4. John Platt b. ca 1726, occ: Clothier, m. 28 May 1754, in Glossop, Mary Bowden, b. ca 1742, d. 25 Nov 1814, Glossop, bur: Glossop. John died 1 Apr 1771, Glossop, bur: Glossop. Described in parish register entries as "of Mouselowe". Admin 1773. Mary: MI says aged 72 when she died.

MI says aged 82 he died. Parish register says of Mouselowe, aged 82. Register entries for bpts of children say "of Hadfield". His will, dated 12 Mar 1813 describes him as "of Padfield".

vi Ann Platt m. 5 Jan 1790, in Glossop, Thomas Hadfield, b. 1768, d. 1835, bur: 3 Mar 1835, Glossop (see family #76 on the fourth Hadfield Page). Ann died 10 Aug 1837, bur: Glossop. MI refers to her as Nancy & says she was aged 40 when she died, need to recheck data. Thomas: Parish register entry for his burial describes him as "of Padfield". MI says he died 30 Apr 1835 aged 69 - check data.
vii James Platt b. 1768, m. Margaret (Platt), b. 1782, d. 1857. James died 1848. Info from Roger Hadfield that MI describes him as "of Brookfield". His father's will describes him as "of Lowerfold".

6. Joshua Platt b. 1729, Glossop, m. Sarah Hadfield, bpt: 20 Feb 1734, Glossop, (daughter of Robert Hadfield) d. 10 Jan 1778, Glossop. Joshua died 21 Oct 1819, Glossop, bur: 21 Oct 1819, Glossop. Parish register entries say "of Shaw". MI describes him as "of Shaw, aged 90". Burial entry in parish register describes him as "of Padfield, aged 90". Sarah: Daughter of Robert Hadfield, 1711-1799 (see family #71 on the fourth Hadfield Page).

(2) 24 Oct 1769, in Glossop, Ellen Syckes, b. 1737, d. 1832, bur: 17 May 1832, Glossop. James died 1806, bur: 2 Aug 1806, Glossop. Parish register for his burial says "of Shaw, aged 70". Register also has an entry for the burial of "A child of James Plats (sic) of Shaw, 18 Apr 1776. Martha: MI says she died 16 Feb 1769 in her 30th year - check data.

9. John Platt b. ca 1765, m. 3 May 1792, in Glossop, Mary Hinchcliffe, b. 1772, d. 25 Nov 1843. John bur: 10 May 1809, Glossop. Parish record entries describe him as "of Dinting" & gives his age as 44 when he died. Mary: Dates information from Roger Hadfield. Her death was reported by Benjamin Platt.

i Sarah Platt b. ca 1796, d. 2 Jul 1857, Glossop. MI gives her age when she died as 61. Administration of her estate was granted to her brother Benjamin.

(2) Marina (Platt), b. 1817, Peak Forest, d. 1 Feb 1879, Glossop, bur: Glossop. Benjamin died 5 Jul 1879, Glossop, bur: Glossop. In Sarah's probate documents he is described as "of Dinting". MI says he was 76 when he died. Census 1851 describes him as a farmer of 30 acres whilst that of 1871 describes him as a farmer of 18 acres at Lower Dinting, 2. Betty: MI gives her age as 26 when she died and also records "an infant". Marina: MI says she died in her 62nd year

10. John Platt bpt: 27 Jan 1761, Glossop. His father's will describes him as "of Lowerfold".

12. James Platt b. 1760, bpt: 20 Aug 1760, Glossop, m. 18 Feb 1783, in Glossop, Anne Mason, b. 1756, d. 3 Mar 1810, bur: 6 Mar 1810, Glossop. James died 22 Oct 1840, bur: Glossop. Anne: Parish register gives her age as 54 when she died.

13. George Platt b. 1774, m. 2 Sep 1798, in Glossop, Evelyn Georgina Hadfield, bpt: 25 Nov 1780, Whitchurch, Shropshire, (daughter of John Hadfield and Ann Sutton). Census 1851 shows a 77 year old George Platt, widowed farmer, living at 60 Padfield with his 36 year old niece, Mary Hall, born Mottram, as his Housekeeper. Evelyn: Her parents were John Hadfield, fraudster, hanged 1803, Carlisle & Ann Sutton. Her grandfather was Thomas Hadfield of Crowden (1735-1802). He was the great grandson of Thomas Hadfield of Crowden (d 1697) who built Crowden Hall (Croddenbrook 1692-1937). Thomas (1735-1802) married Mary (nee) Hadfield at Mottram in 1755. Their first child was John (bpt 1756), the fraudster.

14. John Platt b. 1764, occ: Clothier, m. 22 Oct 1789, in Glossop, Molly Wagstaffe. John died 1804, bur: 15 Dec 1804, Glossop. Parish register entries describe him as "of Whitfield". Molly: Par Reg entries say she was daughter of John Wagstaffe of Bridge End, farmer.

ii James Platt b. ca 1790, bpt: Tintwistle, d. 22 Feb 1838, bur: Glossop. MI says he was 47 when he died.
iii Mary Platt b. 1792, bpt: Tintwistle, m. 2 Jan 1826, in Glossop, George Hadfield, b. 1788, d. 10 Nov 1837, bur: 13 Nov 1837, Glossop. Mary died 1858. George: Parish register entry for his burial describes him as "of Padfield". MI gives his age as 47.
iv Betty Platt b. 1796, d. 16 Mar 1799, bur: 19 Mar 1799, Glossop. MI says she died aged 3 years & 3 months.

Fifth Generation

16. John Platt b. 12 Dec 1797, Glossop, bpt: 25 May 1817, Glossop, occ: Farmer, m. 26 May 1822, in Glossop, Elizabeth Sydall, b. 1795, (daughter of James Syddall and Ellen Tatton) bur: 31 Dec 1830, Parish Church, Glossop, DBY. Entries in the parish register describe him as "of Dinting". Census of 1841 shows him living at Dinting Vale with the family of Thomas and Anne Platt (relationship to John unknown). With him were Mary, Ellen & John. Census of 1851 shows him at 49 Dinting Vale, as a farmer of 14 acres, with Mary and her children. Elizabeth: Entry in parish register gives her age as 35 when she died. No record of birth or baptism found but naming patterns mean that she must be the daughter of James & Ellen (see family #15 on the first Syddall page).

17. Thomas Platt b. 4 Jan 1807, Glossop, bpt: 1 Mar 1807, Glossop, occ: Cotton spinner/shoemaker, m. 12 Apr 1825, in Glossop, Sarah Platt, b. ca 1807. Family lived at Waterside when the first three children were baptised. Census 1841 shows them living at Lower Dinting/Dinting Mill. Sarah: Info from Roger Hadfield that she may have been a widow.

Edward Platt bpt: May 1803, occ: Cotton master, m. 8 Oct 1842, Fanny Garlick, b. 1814, bpt: 5 Feb 1815, Glossop Parish Church, (daughter of John Garlick and Rebecca Hadfield) d. 25 Jun 1887 (see family #67 on the third Garlick Page).. Edward died 14 Jan 1887. Censuses of 1851 & 1861 show his family living at Hadfield Lodge.

i Sarah Bray b. 1822, d. 31 Jul 1902, bur: Glossop. MI says she died in her 81st year.

21. George Platt b. 25 Apr 1799, Glossop, bpt: 8 Jun 1799, Glossop, occ: Cotton spinner, m. 22 Apr 1823, in Glossop, Nancy Dewsnap, b. 1795, d. 1871. Parish register entries say of Glossop, Gamesley, Cross Cliffe & Mill Town.

22. Mary Platt b. Dinting, bpt: 21 Feb 1823, Glossop, m. ? Wild. Census 1841 gives her occupation as cotton weaver.

23. James Platt bpt: 26 Feb 1828, Glossop, occ: Carter, m. 7 Aug 1848, in St James Church, Whitfield, Eliza Oldham, b. Charlesworth, (daughter of Joseph Oldham). Census 1841 shows him at Lower Dinting with his grandmother and his aunt Sarah and uncle Benjamin. Census 1851 shows him at 17 Dinting with his uncle Benjamin. It describes him as an unmarried lodger but also records Eliza and their son Benjamin. He is described as a labourer on Benjamin's birth certificate. At census 1861, family was at 84 Dinting Vale, James recorded as a labourer in the printworks. Age given as 21 on marriage certificate, which also gives residence as Dinting. Eliza: Made her mark when registering Benjamin's birth. Marriage certificate gives age as 20 and residence as Whitfield.

26. Benjamin Platt b. 23 Jun 1849, Dinting Mill, Glossop, occ: Grocer (Master), m. Alice Holden, b. 1849, Glossop, (daughter of John Holden and Clara (Holden)) occ: Grocer's wife. Census 1861 describes him as a Hooker of cotton prints. Census 1881, living at 76 High Street East, Glossop. Census 1891, living at 121 High Street East, Glossop. Morris & Co's Directory of 1878 describes him as a Grocer and corn dealer of 5 & 7 Milltown. Marriage registered March quarter 1871, ref 7b 886. Alice: Birth registered June quarter 1849, ref XIX 644.
