Hadfields of the Old Halls

This page contains details of the descendants of Thomas Hadfield, a Captain in the Civil War of the 17th Century. Various members of the family occupied the Old Halls of Hadfield, Hollingworth, Mottram, Simmondley and Thorncliffe. Once more, any mistakes are mine alone and I apologise. Happy hunting.

• Sarah Hadfield, b 1722, bpt 4 Apr 1722, alive 1759, =(1) 1743 at Peak Forest, Samuel Wagstaffe of Dinting, =(2) Lees of Oldham.
• Zipporah Hadfield, b 1723, d before 28 Sep 1763, = 1 Mar 1753, Samuel Goodyear (see Hannah Hadfield - 3 above).
• (7) Samuel Hadfield, b 1724, bpt 25 Oct 1724.
• Rebekah Hadfield = Jos Marriott of Hayfield..
• Moses Hadfield, b 1737, d 13 Mar 1784, bur 18 Mar 1784, aged 47 of Simmondley Hall, lived in Ireland at one time.

5. Mary Hadfield, b 1717, = 21 Apr 1739 at Peak Forest, John Wood of Marple. Children:

• Rebecca Wood = Thomas Rice of Coleraine. Child: Thomas Rice, b 1788, alive 1841.

6. Thomas Hadfield, b 5 May 1719, bpt 16 May 1719, of Hadfield Hall & Simmondley, d 11 Jan 1789, bur 17 Jan 1789, aged 69 of Simmondley Hall, = 21 Jul 1768, Martha Cooper, b 1744, d 1824 (possibly his second wife). Children:

• (Possibly) Ann Hadfield, bpt 4 Jul 1762.
• Moses Hadfield, bpt 12 Aug 1770 by declaration, d 17 Nov 1844, lived at Shiloh, Mellor & Mottram Old Hall, connected with Chunal Mill, = Harriet Brook.
• George Hadfield, b 11 Mar 1772, bpt 1 Apr 1772, d 28 Sep 1831, bur 4 Oct 1831, aged 60, of Old Hall Mottram & Hollingworth, Old Hall Thorncliffe & Simmondley Hall. Mentioned cousins (possibly second cousins) Thomas Marriott, John Braddock, James Braddock, Elizabeth Farrel & Mary Bagshaw in his will.
• Samuel Hadfield, b 1775, d 21 Feb 1842, of Penistone.

• (10) Hannah Hadfield, b Jul 1779.

7. Samuel Hadfield, b 1724, of Hadfield Old Hall & Mottram Old Hall, Hat manufacturer of Oldham, purchased Mottram Old Hall in 1800, d 1807 Manchester, bur 20 May 1807, aged 83 of Old Hall, = Mary Mitchelle, b 1721, d 1808. Child:

• Zipporah Hadfield, = Thomas Marriott.

8. George Wood. Children:

• (10) John Wood, b Sep 1784.
• Possibly: Mary Wood, Martha Wood, Thomas Wood, James Wood (all mentioned as cousins in the will of George Hadfield (1772-1831)).

9. Martha Hadfield, d 13 Aug 1818 in her 50th year, = John Woodhead of Blackley, Yks. Children:

• Bessie Woodhead, d 12 Jun 1861.
• Hannah Woodhead.
• Thomas Woodhead.
• George Woodhead, d 4 May 1861, inherited Mottram Old Hall from his uncle Moses.

10. Hannah Hadfield, b Jul 1779, d 13 Oct 1829, = John Wood, b Sep 1784, d 24 Feb 1833. Children:

• John Wood, d 2 Aug 1889, aged 74, of Ardern Hall & Mottram Old Hall. Never married.
• Zipporah Wood, b Sep 1818, d May 1874, = William Collier Vaudrey of Bredbury (see family #1 in the third group on the Collier & Vaudrey Page).
• George Wood.
• Martha Wood, inherited Thorncliffe Hall, = Edwin Hugh Shellard.
• Jane Wood.
